So, SSW and I were talking...

So, SSW and I were talking...
We love the RX-7 Convertible. It's cool, it's nice, it's fun.

But it's a two seater. Which means, unless we have a babysitter and go out alone, it sits at home.

We've been talking about old school convertibles that would be fun to haul the kids around in to cruise nights, etc.

We can't afford to get anything right this second unfortunately... With the way the economy is, lots of people are dumping their "toys", and there are some pretty decent deals out there, but money is too tight to dump into a 35 or 40 year old car. She and I are starting to do research into what we'd like, and I figured I'd ask for some input from you guys. SSW wants "a big-Daddy Caddy" or a "boat" of some type. Think B-52s:

"I got me a Chrysler, it's as big as a whale, and it's about to set sail.
I got me a car, it seats about 20, so hurry up and bring your jukebox money!"

I want something that can be hot-rodded out. Big wheels/tires, big engine, lots of power. I'm also looking for something that's cool without being exceptionally popular. Camaros and Challengers are out, because even with a basket case car, you're looking at big money just to get in the door. I'm not worried about resale value or numbers matching or anything like that... I want something that we can slowly restore and drive for the next 30 or 40 years. I'd like to upgrade things so it has A/C, heated seats, etc, etc, etc.

Since it seems a lot of us are into the old school stuff, I figured I'd start a thread asking for ideas of things I may not have thought of. I'm not a fan of fins, so I've mostly been looking at '65 to '75 era convertibles.

Some stuff I've found that seems pretty interesting to me:

Now, I would love something like Guests cannot see links in the messages. Please register to forum by clicking here to see links. or an International Scout, but Lynn isn't feeling that kind of thing.

There's a place near us that has a TON of 1960s and 1970s convertibles in various stages of disrepair. I don't know why they are all the guy has, and it seems like they never get sold or moved, but I noticed today he has at least 3 of the mid 60's Lincoln convertibles with the suicide rear doors. Lynn and I both like those, too.

What do you guys suggest?

If you are looking budget research part prices and availability before you go any further. I think the cheapest you could do for a 60's era vert would be a Mustang, still a lot of old Stangs around and the prices arent horrible.

Oh, and whatever we decide to go with, we want to do gloss black, light tan interior and bright chrome, so try to picture whatever car it is that way.

Big pimpin'!!!

I like this Guests cannot see links in the messages. Please register to forum by clicking here to see links., but again, I'd kinda like to start from scratch so we can really have it the way we want it. That's a sexy car, though.

Without bacon it is impossible to please me, because
anyone who comes to me must believe that bacon exists
and that I will reward those who bring me bacon.

You're right, that's pretty sweet.

I'm looking for something with a big ass trunk, too, and that looks like it qualifies. It needs to be able to hold the kids bikes or whatever, along with the enclosure for the subs.

Definitely different. I know those 455s can be built to make some serious power, too, but bottom line is, it's huge, it would look pretty awesome on some 20s, and it doesn't seem like it's ultra desirable, so it could start out cheap.
