Help me build a cheap desktop
My desktop is running like shyt ever since the motherboard fried itself out. We had it replaced, but it's still sucking ballz.

I'd like to replace it. I have a nice monitor and all the peripherals. All we need is the box, the cpu and the crap that goes inside.

Basically, it will be my wife's computer... So picture storage and music storage are important to her. I'd like to be able to burn DVDs and CDs on it.

I can go buy a $300 desktop at Wal-mart, but I'm assuming you guys could help me build something better for less money. I'm a poor college student now, so doing it as cheaply as possible is important.

Ideas please?

That Asus I got from Newegg is fucking awesome.......I think I paid like $800 for the computer, a bad ass set of speakers and a 24" monitor so you should be able to get just the computer for not to much....

Here's something comparable to mine for $329....

RE: Help me build a cheap desktop
What is your wife going to be using the computer for, other than media storage and disk burning? Just about anything short of video games and other graphics programs can be done on a basic netbook, so I'd look at the specs on those and go from there.

All you'd need for a graphics card is one that would send a display to the monitor and anything more than $50 here is going to be overkill. You can get a decent barebones kit for less than $100 (case, power supply, and MB), and if you get a MB with enough slots you can always upgrade your RAM later on as needed. I wouldn't get too caught up in DDR, DDR2, or DDR3 memory here, standard DDR should be sufficient and plentiful (cheap). DVD/CD burner combo drives are cheap if you just need them to work and are not too concerned with speed, $25-$50.

Sometimes things are cheaper over on tigerdirect.com, otherwise newegg.com will usually have it cheaper. All I can say otherwise is Ebay and craigslist will be your friend for some of the hardware, PC geeks are always trying to unload their stuff.

Comes out to a less than $250 for hardware. Throw in shipping charges and you should still be well under $300 and should give you a comparable system for what you can get at wally-world. That ought to get you started, now just look either for lower prices or for better/faster for the same price.

Nice. How do I put it together? Is it simple?

RE: Help me build a cheap desktop
Why fuck with it when you can get a bad ass Asus ready to plug in out of the box for just a little more?

The link you put up is to refurbished stuff, and the reviews aren't very good.

Super easy. Most cases have plenty of adjustable screw slots (basically a nut that screws into the case that the securing screws for the MB screw into), making MB attachment hassle free. The drives have their own dedicated slots and screws for attachment to the case, it's easy to tell what goes where when you have the case opened up. The RAM and processor only go in one way and will be clear which slot they go into. Then it's just a matter of matching the plug type with the interface on the board and assorted peripheries. Most boards even come with manuals that outline what each plug will do and what they're compatible with in case you get lost. Easy as pie.
